SUPERVISION OF RESTORATION AND RECONSTRUCTION WORKS ON BESAC FORTRESS IN VIRPAZAR, SKADAR LAKE

    Year:

Besac fortress is located on an elevation of 50 metres above sea level, in the immediate vicinity of the settlement of Virpazar. The fortress is reached via a secondary vehicular road running along a lake bank and 200 metres away from the contemporary Vir-Ostros route.

The Fortress of Besac represents a fortification complex composed by an outer defensive wall with a gate, watchtowers and enclosed buildings, including a fort with circular towers, barracks, as well as the remains of auxiliary structures. The buildings within the rampart perimeter are suitably arranged and interconnected in the form of paved pathways along several levels of the site. Due to long abandonment and neglect, the fortress remained ruinous.

The project proposed the reconstruction of the fortress, alongside the revitalisation of the overall historic environment.
