STONE STAIRCASE, CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, PRČANJ

    Year:

    2021

The monumental access staircase that represents part of the complex of the Church of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary in Prčanj was built in 1913 following the project of the architect Milan Karlovac. The stairway is symmetrically arranged along the central axis of the church, and is divided into several arms and landings. The main landing features a semi-circular wall niche with the sculpture of Christ the Saviour. The staircase ends on a plateau where the church itself is located, together with busts of notable individuals in the history of Prčanj and the Bay of Kotor. The stairway is also composed of massive retaining walls and railings with moulded balusters of Korčula limestone. The overall length of the staircase is cca. 60 meters.

During the felling of diseased palm trees surrounding the stairway in 2020, part of the main stair arm was damaged, including several steps, part of a landing and, most significantly, part of the balustrade.

The aim of the conservation project was the analysis of the state and the restoration necessary with respect to the damage that occurred in 2020 and previously. The project encompassed the documentation of all forms of material deterioration, as well as the collection and analysis of the fragments of damaged balusters and upper handrails. Following the survey of each individual fragment and the analysis of its original position, the project defined the means of conserving the existing and the restoration of damaged portions of the balustrade, with respect to maintaining the original building material to the greatest extent.
